Ninth Commandment

My pastor did a series through the Ten Commandments and I thought about the ninth commandment which says bear false witnesses are a no-go. Please note I know what bearing false witness actually is. But to think of it this way is much more entertaining. Also, I totally don't trust that bear.

Tenth Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The tenth commandment is: "You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." - Exodus 20:17 (ESV)

The hand motion is: both hands open then both hands closed, like you're grabbing for something that isn't yours (such as your neighbor's ox or his xbox).

In summary:
1- One God
2- No Idols
3- Watch your Words
4- Honor the Sabbath
5- Honor your Parents
6- No Murder
7- No Adultery
8- No Stealing
9- No Lying
10- No Coveting

Ninth Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The ninth commandment is: "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." - Exodus 20:16 (ESV)

The hand motion is: one hand with all five fingers up and the other hand with four fingers up which means the thumb is pointing a different direction than the rest so he's the one telling a different story i.e. the liar (with his pants possibly on fire). 

Eighth Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The eight commandment is: "You shall not steal." - Exodus 20:15 (ESV)

The hand motion is: one hand with all five fingers up and the other hand with just three fingers up (because back in the day you got a finger chopped off when you were caught stealing so this person was caught twice. that's kinda gory).

Seventh Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The seventh commandment is: "You shall not commit adultery." - Exodus 20:14 (ESV)

The hand motion is: one hand with all five fingers up (like a group of people) and the other hand with just two fingers up (like a couple who are happily married or like a V for virgin).

Sixth Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The sixth commandment is: "You shall not murder." - Exodus 20:13 (ESV)

The hand motion is: one hand with four fingers up and the other hand with the thumb and index up like a gun (since it's a common murder weapon). 

Fifth Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The fifth commandment is: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." - Exodus 20:12 (ESV)

The hand motion is: whole hand flat and saluting your parents as a sign of honor.

Summary at the halfway point:

4- honor the sabbath

Fourth Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The fourth commandment is: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." - Exodus 20:8-11 (ESV)

The hand motion is: four fingers, thinking of a four person family getting into their four door car which has four wheels and going to church (it's kind of a stretch but it connects eventually to the sabbath).

Also, it's September! Woohoo, my favorite month. Time for Fall, and Birthday, and No More Summer Heat (one can hope, right), and coziness, and Renaissance Faire, and the Big E, and all that to say good things.

Third Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.
I looked on Pinterest for hand drawings because I usually just do stick figures but stick figure hands kinda look like skeletons and I wasn't wanting to go for that. Too Tim-Burton-like.

The third commandment is: "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lordwill not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." - Exodus 20:7

The hand motion is: three fingers up in a 'W' shape, for Watch your Words.

Second Commandment

My pastor at FBC is currently going through a series on the Ten Commandments, and I remembered these hand motions that my pastor at TBC back in CT taught me as a kid.

The second commandment is: "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments." - Exodus 20:4-6

The hand motion is: two fingers to the side, opening and closing like scissors. I don't think people normally used scissors to make idols, it seems they were usually made out of stone or metal or wood, but the meaning is still there. Don't make stuff to worship (more specifically, don't worship things - only worship God).

First Commandment

When I was a kid, I had a home school group that met at our church, TBC, and we called ourselves TBA, and we had a chapel service and our pastor headed it up. This one time, he did a huge series on the Ten Commandments and we had hand motions to go along with them. We also memorized the first part of Exodus 20, since that's where the commandments are.

The first commandment is: "You shall have no other gods before me." -Exodus 20:3.

The hand motion is: index finger pointing up.
