Hisnia

It was a confusing conversation that spawned this comic. It is funny but also rather frustrating when people see the letters that make a pronoun in a word and change it to their preferred pronoun as if every instance of his/him/her/she in a word is a direct link to a pronoun. Also it took me a minute to remember the male form of her, like him? he? wait use it in a sentence "her bag" would be "his bag" ok I got it.

Explanation: "Hernia" is a medical condition that also contains the letter group "her" which is a female pronoun. But I just realized "do you see her/him" works as well as "that is her/his bag" so really it could be a himnia. That sounds like a condition related to church songs (hymns).

Text:
D: You have a hernia.
M: No, I'm a guy. It must be a hisnia.

Pesto Bismol

 enable images please
Happy Birthday to my little brother!
Funky, fresh, and what else do you need when your tummy is rumbly? I think the Sharks are gonna say nope, but maybe they like the fresh take? Maybe they have indigestion and figure, why not?

Explanation: Pepto-Bismol is a medicine for indigestion and the like. Pesto is a sauce of crushed basil leaves, pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil, typically served with pasta. Combine the two, and I'm truly not sure what would happen.

Text:
A: I want to innovate medicine with fresh ingredients, so I present: Pesto-Bismol!
Shark1: *inquisitive*
Shark2: *face-palm*

Ranking Hospitals

 enable images please

Happy Birthday to my Brother-in-Law! He's about a year older than me and a few years ago he had appendicitis so ever since I've been wary that my appendix could expire at any time. He probably went to the local General Hospital. There's a road near me named Columbia Gateway but it's abbreviated on signs to Col. Gateway and that makes me think either Colonel Gateway or shorten it further to Col. Gate. like the toothpaste. Also for this comic I was thinking what other ranks could be funny hospitals and realized Private Hospital is a thing.

Explanation: General Hospitals are a thing, they aren't specialist. But also General is a military ranking like Colonel. But I'm pretty sure military hospitals don't rank like that.

Text:
A: Are they at the Windsor General Hospital?
B: No, the Windsor Colonel Hospital.

Testing Patients

 enable images

So I heard the phrase "testing my patience" and thought this up. If you are in the medical field, please find a way to use this at work. I saw some funny medical stickers that made me think of an EMT friend of mine, but I don't remember exactly what they said, just that they were funny in a medical way. One of them was something like "natural selection intervention squad."

Explanation: "patients" and "patience" sound the same but are different things (one is a virtue, the other is a category of people). To "test my patience" means you're being irritating, but "testing my patience" means you're checking the education of the people here to see the doctor.

Text:
Dr: Are you testing my patients?!?
N: Yes, and they are flunking - this is basic pathophysiology!

Donating vs Sampling

enable images!

I had to get blood drawn and this comic came to mind. I did not say it out loud but I was thinking it. Also, it's a little unrealistic that a place would do both donations and samples - usually donations are handled through Red Cross centers or volunteer locations like churches whereas lab orders are filled at places like LabCorp where it's all medical samples there.
The place I went to has a feature where you can check in from your car and just chill there until they are ready for you which is nice because many medical places are still requiring masks so spending less time in the mask is good. But when they sent me the text to say they were ready to see me, I received it 27 times. Thankfully I didn't have the sound on my phone so it was afterwards when I checked my phone that I saw wow, that's a lot of messages.

Text:
Title: Phlebotomy
N: Are you here to donate?
L: No, I'm here to sample.
N: ... ?
L: Here's my lab order.

Rhino Virus

Horn erupted from his face

Today I learned that rhinoviruses are named from the Greek 'rhinos' which means 'of the nose' and that makes sense. At least 'horn erupting from face' is not a common symptom of the common cold! I wonder if cases of colds have gone down this year since so many people are staying indoors, away from people and the weather. I'm sure someone has the data on that, but I don't know how it's calculated since so many people (many of them children) get colds and just tough it out, so there wouldn't be records of them.

Text:
A: I wasn't feeling well, then this horn erupted on my face!
B: Ah, classic rhino virus.

Sterile Environment

Sterile Environment

Happy early Birthday to my eldest sister!
I feel like most people prefer seedless grapes but that could just be an assumption. Seedy grapes (that doesn't sound right) remind me of going to my Great-Grandmother's house because she liked them and I quickly learned to eat around the seeds but that's the only place I really remember having grapes with seeds. I liked going there and have many happy memories from my childhood with GG. Back to the comic, when thinking of hospital food only Jell-O comes to mind. I'm sure they have more food than that but it's the classic. I have not had Jell-O in a while - there is a family recipe for pretzel salad which is a 9x13 dessert and has Jell-O, strawberries, whipped cream, and a pretzel crust and is quite good. I also have a recipe for Dr. Pepper Jell-O salad which has Jell-O, fruit, and of course Dr. Pepper. I should make that again - it's quite good.

Text:
A: Why are all the grapes seedless in the hospital cafeteria?
B: It's a sterile environment!

Vitals Taken

The nurse took his vitals!

Happy December! Stay healthy out there. I thought this up after a doctor's appointment and thinking through the phrase 'taking your vitals' because yeah that'd be bad if taken (haha) literally. This comic layout is similar to one I drew a while ago about 'not dying on my watch' - oh here it is. Hah, a while ago is apparently eight years. That was near the beginning of my blog - it's interesting to see how my style has changed. And the layout between the two comics isn't overly similar but I guess it was the 'one person laying down' that triggered the link. Also not sure about the grammar in this one - should it be 'are' or 'is'? Neither seemed correct so I just picked 'are' since it's two items. Grammar is hard.

Text:
A: Why are your blood pressure and temperature so low?!?
B: The nurse... took.... my vitals.

Using a Crutch

I have never used crutches but I probably should have with some of my leg injuries. I have used a wrist brace after I broke my arm in high school (sledding). Being braced is annoying but necessary when injured.

A: He's using that medical device as a crutch!
B: Yes, that's what it is though.

Daydreaming

I thought this up when I zoned out for a moment at my day job and then thought of my sis-in-law who's a nurse and works a rotating schedule which means sometimes it's at night. She is not fond of the night shift. I wouldn't be, either.

Wax Impaction

And this is why I switched to over-the-ear headphones (for most of the time anyways). My sister-in-law is a nurse and enlightened me about this. It is quite ear-itating when your ears hurt. I use headphones quite a bit at work since my team is spread out so we all call in for them, and also I like to listen to music and not share it with everyone (I think they appreciate that).

Lame Excuse

After drawing this, I hurt my foot (see here) so it's kind of ironic?
