Repost from 2017

 enable images please
A repost from 2017. Happy Easter! This is from way back when I was drawing my comics with a pencil then pen then scanning it in and trimming it down then posting. It was a bit more labor-intensive than drawing digitally and posting. But I like the look. I also like Robin Egg candies (chocolate-covered malt balls with a candy coating).

Amid the candies and secular wrappings of this holiday, take time to remember the truth that He is Risen Indeed - Jesus is alive! He came to earth to live a sin-less life and be the perfect sacrifice to take away the sins of the world. He died on the cross and three days later rose again, overcoming death and the grave. Hallelujah, Christ Arose! Find a Bible-based church near you to find out more.

K2: that's amazing!

A: haha - it's a candy robin egg - a malt ball! You don't think it's funny. OK, then.

Old MacDonald Part 1

 enable images please

A new twist on a classic song? Or a plot that is thickening?

Explanation: if you have a farm with nothing on it, anywhere, what are you doing with a farm? Clearly you are hiding what you're doing, and it might not be farm related. The song should go "on that farm he had a sheep (or whatever animal)" and then the animal noise in duplicate "with a baa baa here and a baa baa there."

Text:
R: Old MacDonald had a farm... on that farm he had NOTHING! Nothing nothing here, nothing nothing there!
L: ... Is Old MacDonald getting investigated by the FDA?

None Good

Happy Easter! He is risen, just as He said.
This comic is a true story showing how Ori will emphatically answer questions with "yes" or "no" without regard to what has been asked.

Explanation: The Bible says there is none good, no not one. Therefore, Ori is correct to say he is not good. The second comic references total depravity, which is a doctrine much contested (but the author believes all are born sinful and can only be redeemed through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross).

Text:
L: Are ya good?
O: No!
M: He is theologically sound.
L: Are you utterly depraved?
O: No!
M: He needs a hermeneutics refresher.

Riddle me E

 enable images to see comic

At first I didn't get what my man said because I heard it as "you" and I was like "no, that has no 'e's in it!" but then he clarified it as a female sheep and I was befuddled. The expected answer was "envelope" because the letter contained in it is a physical paper like a note also called a letter. But "ewe" sounds like the letter U so now there are two answers. Can you think of any more that qualify? The word must start and end with E and contain one letter (take that as you will). EYE! That's a third answer (sounds like I). Words like "eve" or "ere" don't qualify in my opinion because they contain three letters (i.e. "how many letters does the word "eve" contain?) but an argument could be made for saying the 'e's contain the one letter but that's really breaking down what 'contain' means in reference to a word.

Text:
L: What word starts and ends with E and contains one letter?
M: Ewe.
L: Envel... wait a minute - that works, too.

Foolproof Brownies

 enable images please
Happy Birthday to my sister! And a belated Happy April Fool's Day to everybody. It didn't seem right to post this the day before the holiday as that was Easter, so you get it belated. I could have posted it a day early, but that's not my schedule and I rarely deviate from it. As for the comic, I saw an ad about foolproof brownies and thought, oh I guess those aren't for clowns. I'm not sure what the recipe was however I did Google for recipes and found these: 1 2

Explanation: Clowns are also called fools. When you have something foolproof, that means nobody can mess it up but it also could be taken to mean that a fool can't get it.

Text:
C: Why can't I eat this?!?
L: They're foolproof brownies.

Repost: Robin Eggs

enable images

Way back in 2012 (wow, 12 years ago!), I came up with one of my favorite comics of all time and yes this is it. I also really like Robin Egg candies so I'm a little biased on this. I didn't come up with a new Easter comic this year because it's hard to get specific ideas, and I usually get them after the holiday and have to write them up and save for the next year.

Happy Easter / Resurrection Day to all! There are many resources to learn more about the reason for this season, but here's one if you'd rather not search around.

Settle the Child

 enable images!

This came up because my family likes to play table top games in the evening (usually card but sometimes board). My Mark didn't get this on first read but then it connected, which means I probably need an explanation. To "settle" a child is to help them calm down, usually for a nap or bedtime but sometimes just to calm down from a freak-out. "Settlers of Catan," often abbreviated "Settlers," is a board game where you gain resources by trading or luck of the dice in order to build your settlement. Some of those resources are sheep and wheat (also ore, wood, and brick). Fun fact, the first time I played Settlers was at a year-end vacation (at Word of Life) and the deck was partially in German for some reason but the pictures were clear what they meant.

Text:
M: Can I help you settle the toddler?
L: She needs two sheep and a wheat.
L2: *crying*

Idea Gathering

enable images!

If you are going to gather something, it needs to go in a basket. It's where you gather your herbs and mushrooms if you're a forager and where you gather your Easter eggs if you're a hunter. We have a dinosaur basket (looks something like this) and it's excellent and people who know me know that I got it before I had a kid but most people would just assume it's my child's instead of mine but now actually my child's because she has laid claim to it.

Text:
L: What's with the basket?
D: I'm gathering ideas!
L: ... is that working?
D: Nope.

Nebraska, Page 1

enable images!

The week before Easter, we went out to the Midwest for my brother-in-law Peter's wedding. We took a roundabout path to get there - flying into Denver, driving up to Wyoming, over to South Dakota, then finally to Nebraska for the wedding, and finishing by driving back to Colorado to fly out. It was a great week! It was our first major trip with out almost-one-year-old (she's one at time of posting, but you can see this trip was a few weeks ago). We had my brother-in-law Noah with us for the trip which was great - having three adults and one baby is a good ratio :)
The conversation in this comic didn't quite happen - the waitress was looking at my driver's license because my credit card says to verify ID, and when she asked why we were out there we just gave the short version of "brother marrying a local."

Text:
So much text. This is the title page for my Nebraska travel comic blog so it says "Nebraska" in block letters then specifies "also: Denver CO, Laramie WY, Rapid City SD, and Chadron for Nebraska" with the dates April 11-17, 2022.
Waitress, examining driver's license: What brings someone from Maryland to Nebraska?
M: My brother, who's living in the Middle East, is marrying his fiancée, who's living in Africa, and she's from North Dakota.
W: ?
W: Well, have a nice day!
L: Thanks!

Happy Easter! He is risen indeed. I hope you are able to take time today to focus on the gift of Jesus' resurrection, and what that means for you individually.  If you want to learn more, click any of those links in the previous sentence!

A: How did you pick the name for your church?
B: "Grace" and "Greater Grace" were already in use.

Cereals of Catan

enable images!

I was eating my breakfast cereal and happened to look at the fine print on the box and saw this warning (Contents may settle during shipment) and clearly I had to draw this. Settlers of Catan is a fun game provided you put time limits on people's turns so one person doesn't make the game go on for hours (it seems like hours anyways - nobody can or wants to give you bricks so just move on!). Also, I really like Blueberry Morning BUT they are not a sponsor for this AND they probably don't want you to know that you can buy freeze-dried fruit at many grocery stores and just add your own blueberries to your cereal. Or strawberries or whatever fruit floats your boat. You probably could mortar and pestle the freeze-dried fruits and get a nice fruity coverage over all your cereal bowl - that could be tasty. I feel like there was a mythological figure that traveled around in a mortar and pestle, possibly Russian, let me look that up. I was right! It's Baba Yaga

Text:
Cereal Box Label: Contents may settle during shipment.
Voice 1 from cereal box: Anybody have a sheep?
Voice 2 from cereal box: Two bricks?
Voice 3 from cereal box: I NEED ORE!

Little Bird Gossip

enable images

HAPPY 2'S DAY!!!! Yep, it's 2/22/22 and Tuesday. How nice for that to line up.

I don't recall what prompted this one, probably I heard the phrase "a little birdie told me" or maybe I read that passage in the Bible that mentions it. I thought about drawing the birds as stick figures, but honestly I don't know how to do that unless they are little m's in the sky and that doesn't really work with this dialog.

The phrase means you aren't going to tell who your source is when sharing a bit of information, as if a little bird dropped down and gave you some info. Which sounds like something from the song "Do you hear what I hear" - is one of the characters in that telephone chain a bird? Night wind, little lamb, shepherd boy, mighty king, people everywhere - nope, no birds.

Text:
Title: "A little birdie told me"
Raven: What's up, little bird?
Bluebird: I have all the gossip.

Do You Hear What I Hear

 enable images!

I have always thought, since listening to the lyrics, that the song "Do You Hear What I Hear" is quite odd. The night wind talking to a little lamb, maybe that's happened since we don't know what sheep know. But the lamb talking to his shepherd boy? Unlikely. Then that shepherd having a direct line to the mighty king? But the king to his people everywhere - that is acceptable. But anyways, it's a popular song. Also, the line from the shepherd here is from another song. "Shepherds, why this jubilee?"

Text:
Title: Ok, I should tell the Mighty King
Shepherd Boy: What the gladsome tidings be, Little Lamb?
Little Lamb: I heard about a star from the night wind.

Ambiguous Cartoon Critter

Here's a picture of the cartoon creature in question - the model is clearly concerned over what it is.

After polling many people, we had suggestions of mouse, cow, sheep, bear, dinosaur, puppy, lamb, and koala. I was thinking it's a mouse but upon seeing all the suggestions, leaning towards a polar bear. The critter is repeated on the feet of the sleeper but looks roughly the same there so no help from multiple angles. But it's still a cute outfit, even if we don't know what's on it.

Text:
M: Is that a mouse on her sleeper? Or a ... cow?
L: It's a cute little ambiguous cartoon critter.

Hot and Cross Buns

Battle of the Breakfasts?

Happy Resurrection Day! Hot cross buns are a classic Easter food and I like them as long as they don't have raisins in them (many of them do). I'm just not a fan of raisins in my bread. I know many people like them like that and I will leave them to them and just have a donut. Because if you get the good donuts, like from the Donut Shack near my dentist, they are just amazing. I wonder if the European bakery near me will have hot cross buns in their lineup around Easter time. They just added brioche sticky buns and brioche cinnamon buns, and both are amazing.

Text:
Donut 1: Look out - the buns are hot and cross.
Donut 2: *startled!*
Hot Cross Buns: *steaming angrily*

Easter Egg Painting

How do you get the egg out of its shell?

I thought of this last year and placed it in a place to find it in time for this Easter! I'm quite happy with my organizational skills. Usually I put the holiday ones in a safe place and only find them after the given holiday. That's not the most helpful. The craft is a mash-up of two recipes - clearly the one is deviled eggs but the other is where you take a raw egg, poke the holes, blow it out, then you can use the guts for scrambled eggs or whatever while you have the whole egg shell to paint beautifully. You can't hard boil a shell-less egg - the closest thing I can think of would be poaching, which I've never done.

Text:
L: So we can hard boil the eggs, poke a pin hole in the top and bottom, blow the egg out while saving the shell, then I can paint the shells while you make deviled eggs!
M: Hang on...

Two Shakes of a Lambs Tail

I need to look up what this odd saying means

Happy Passover to those who celebrate - I thought a lamb comic would be appropriate. I am eternally grateful to the Perfect Lamb, Who sacrificed Himself for my redemption!
What does this phrase mean? I guess lambs shake their tails quickly. Maybe they're twitchy? I haven't observed lambs much, I really only see them at the 4-H section of the local County Fair (and I'm not interested enough to look up a video on YouTube). And I'm more interested in looking at the goats weird eyes (they have rectangular pupils!!! Why???) or the emus if they happen to have any (sometimes they do!). And now that I think about it, I am not sure they even have lambs at the Fair - they might just have full grown sheep. Maybe we'll have the Fair this year and I can report back if I see how fast a lamb tail shake lasts.

Text:
A: How quickly can we get there?
B: *raises hand*
Lamb: Stop shaking my tail!!!

Fake Gnus Part 1

Sheep to cows wearing wildebeest horns: Fake Gnus!

A coworker of mine likes to claim Fake News so after Scrum one day I drew this up. Just in time for the election! Why is it a Part 1? Could there be a Part 2? You'll find out on Tuesday (or by hitting the "Next" button if you're looking at this after 11/3/2020).

What is a gnu? It's a wildebeest! Have I crocheted one of these from my Pattern Book of African Animals? Surprisingly no, it has a pattern for African Buffalo and I thought that's what a gnu was but I was mistaken.

Sheep Uprising

This was inspired by our trip to Ireland a few years ago - one of our tour guides mentioned how the sheep liked to break through the hedges and get all in the road and stop the cars and he described it as a 'sheep uprising.' Our tour times always had a caveat for sheep uprisings, cause if they were blocking the road then things were gonna be delayed. We did not see any sheep uprisings and also we had a great time over there. So much history and beautiful vistas and such nice people.

Title: After the latest uprising through the hedge
Ram: This breakthrough is all thanks to ewe!
Ewe: The ramifications are huge!

Lost Sheep Pie

Alternate take on Luke 15

We are reading through the Bible with our Sunday class and I thought this one up after reading Luke 15. The shepherd invites all his friends to a party after finding his lost sheep, and as I was raised Baptist then if you have a gathering there needs to be food so clearly if he's a shepherd, he'd make pie. But then it all kinda falls apart when you know the meaning of the parable
I also remember the first time I made shepherd's pie. I was kinda horrified to find that the main ingredient is the cute little lamb. But it's so tasty.
It's funny how you can remember something incorrectly. I thought there was an episode of Young Hercules where they are in charge of an inn for the day and the only thing they know how to make is shepherd's pie so they convince each table that the only good thing on the menu is shepherd's pie but actually it's chicken salad that they know how to make and convince everyone to order.

Text:
S: I'm having a party because I found my lost sheep!
B: Awesome! What's for dinner?
S: Shepherd's Pie.
