Discus Dinner Plans

 enable images please

How are the Olympics nearly over? How do they fit so many competitions into the time a family can spends at Disney World?

So this one time in college I competed in discus and shot put (my school had a one day event with all the classic Olympic athletics like running and jump things). I did not do well because those are in fact real sports and I did not have a clue as to how to toss them about. But I did get a quick refresher from some nice competitors who actually knew what they were doing.

Explanation: To "discuss" is to converse about a thing. To "discus" is to do the sport of discus, which is where you throw basically a stone frisbee as far as you can.

Text:
A: Can you come to dinner on Tuesday?
B: I need to throw an oblate spheroid weight with my husband first.
A: ... what?
B: We will discus then get back to you.

Super Bowl Players

 enable images please

I am surprised that "Taylor Swift" showed up in my tags and now I'm wondering what other comics I've made about her. Here they are! 1 2 3

I'm really not into sports so I was unaware of who made it to the big game, other than not my local team. Also I'm pretty sure TSwift isn't doing the Half Time Show but she's being talked about more than whoever's doing that so yeah that's how this comic happened.

Text:
A: Who's playing in the Super Bowl?
B: Taylor Swift.

Spirit of the Game

 enable images!

Catch the spirit? I feel like this would be a great Halloween costume. Would make you think a little bit to understand it. Could also be a fun addition to your local sports stadium. Some have the running of the presidents, another could have this.

Explanation: A ghost is also called a spirit.

Text:
A: This stadium is haunted!!!
B: Oh, that's just the Spirit of the Game.

Cross-Country Snowboarding

enable images!

So often when I'm talking with people, work comes up and I use to work in an office and I like what I did. But a few years ago I had a major change so now I'm not an office working software engineer. And often, I miss my programming days. But then I find some of the comics, like this one, that I wrote during my office days and I realize I'm not missing those annoying parts. So it's good to remember both the good and the bad of the past so you don't idolize it all rosy-like.

Explanation: You cannot move across a flat surface with both feet strapped into your snowboard. Well, you can but it involves jumping/lunging and that's exhausting. So cross-country skiing is totally a thing which is a real workout, but cross-country snowboarding would just be super frustrating and might be entertaining to watch. UPDATE: I am at least the second party to think of this sport because here's a video about this "sport."

Text:
A: How is your job going?
B: Like I'm cross-country snowboarding.

Truly Not A Fan

 enable images!

My brother-in-law has been inviting everyone over to watch football on Sunday afternoons, and it's a nice way to pass the afternoon (not nearly as boring as watching cars race in a loop, so that's nice). When I first moved to this state, I was sucked into the football fandom to become a casual fan. I mostly understand the sport, but I feel like it's rather violent and I root for the kicker since he doesn't get hit (at least he shouldn't). Also, Maryland has by far the best kicker so that's a plus.

Gentle reminder that Tuesday (in two days) is election day in the USA, so please research and vote responsibly!

Text:
A: Ready for the game?
B: (looking at phone) I don't know who or when they are playing.
A: *scoff* How can you call yourself a true fan?!?
B: I don't.

Lovely Tennis Score

enable images!

So I don't know much about tennis but I did hear (in a Valentine's quiz thing) that "love" is what you call it when your score is zero, something about the French word for "egg" sounds like "love" and eggs are round like a zero. At my college, PE was required for most majors and the most popular class was tennis - they had so very many session of it. I did not want to get sweaty so I did ice skating and broom hockey - both took place on the ice rink and were very fun and kept me cool in the Florida humidity.

Text:
A: How is your tennis score looking?
B: Lovely.
A: How unfortunate.

Soccer Scoring

enable images!

So I'm not really a sports person but this one was inspired by a dinner we had at a restaurant which had a soccer game playing on one of their screens. I can enjoy watching sports, if they are fast-paced enough to keep my attention and also if I understand said sport.

A: Is there a non-zero score?
B: Yes!
A: ooOOooh, exciting.

Totally Different Movies: Rocky and Mowinkel

Rocky and Mowinkel

This one has been sitting around for a while and might be past due but I was hoping to share it with the Olympics since it was inspired by the last Winter Olympics however the Summer ones didn't happen and now here it is. The movie should be Rocky and Bullwinkle but instead is Rocky and Mowinkel. I don't even know what this movie would be about. It would be nothing like the flying squirrel and moose cartoon, of that I am fairly certain.

Let us Discus Shot Put

My college had Field Day once a year and it was all the classic Olympic track and field events like long jump and sprints and such. One year I signed up for it because while I'm not the most athletic (I really don't like running so my two P.E. classes were ice skating and broom hockey), I figured shot put and discus should be fine because what are the odds that any current college student would know how to do this? The odds were very high for non-American students apparently. But some Tongans were very friendly and showed me how to throw the surprisingly solid ball and disc and I totally failed but that is expected when trying something for the first time against people who know what they're doing. But it was fun! I would do it again and probably fail just as badly.
My college did not have all the track and field events; I think there was a very good reason we did not do the hammer throw. That just seems like a bad plan to do with minimal training.
The pun here is that to talk about something is to discuss it - if you wish to throw a disc in an Olympic event, that's a discus.

Text:
A: What are we doing for fun this weekend?
B: We can discus tonight?
A: I'd prefer shot put.

Baseball Confusion

Happy belated Birthday to my brother-in-law! He's several time zones to the east so that means... it's definitely after his birthday.
I had this comic in the works for a while but I had just written down 'bat who plays baseball' and I could not remember the thought that caused that or why I had written it down so briefly. I had to look up what rye looks like, as that's not a normal thing I encounter. Also, I forgot to draw who's up to bat. It's a very skeletal crew. Haha, I should incorporate that somehow but drawing a stick figure skeleton does not sound simple.

Text:
Announcer 1: The bat is pitching, the rye is catching, and the pitcher is on 2nd.
Announcer 2: This game is so confusing.
*Bat (animal) is pitching, a stalk of rye is catching, and a pitcher of Kool-aid is on 2nd*

Tar Nation

 Oh those Tar Heels...

Here's another take on the comic, with more context?
