Do You Hear What I Hear

 

I have always thought, since listening to the lyrics, that the song "Do You Hear What I Hear" is quite odd. The night wind talking to a little lamb, maybe that's happened since we don't know what sheep know. But the lamb talking to his shepherd boy? Unlikely. Then that shepherd having a direct line to the mighty king? But the king to his people everywhere - that is acceptable. But anyways, it's a popular song. Also, the line from the shepherd here is from another song. "Shepherds, why this jubilee?"

Two Shakes of a Lambs Tail

 

Happy Passover to those who celebrate - I thought a lamb comic would be appropriate. I am eternally grateful to the Perfect Lamb, Who sacrificed Himself for my redemption! 
What does this phrase mean? I guess lambs shake their tails quickly. Maybe they're twitchy? I haven't observed lambs much, I really only see them at the 4-H section of the local County Fair (and I'm not interested enough to look up a video on YouTube). And I'm more interested in looking at the goats weird eyes (they have rectangular pupils!!! Why???) or the emus if they happen to have any (sometimes they do!). And now that I think about it, I am not sure they even have lambs at the Fair - they might just have full grown sheep. Maybe we'll have the Fair this year and I can report back if I see how fast a lamb tail shake lasts.

Lost Sheep Pie

We are reading through the Bible with our Sunday class and I thought this one up after reading Luke 15. The shepherd invites all his friends to a party after finding his lost sheep, and as I was raised Baptist then if you have a gathering there needs to be food so clearly if he's a shepherd, he'd make pie. But then it all kinda falls apart when you know the meaning of the parable. 

I also remember the first time I made shepherd's pie. I was kinda horrified to find that the main ingredient is the cute little lamb. But it's so tasty. 

It's funny how you can remember something incorrectly. I thought there was an episode of Young Hercules where they are in charge of an inn for the day and the only thing they know how to make is shepherd's pie so they convince each table that the only good thing on the menu is shepherd's pie but actually it's chicken salad that they know how to make and convince everyone to order.

Wool Over Eyes

Happy Resurrection Day! He is risen indeed. Once for all is slain, God's Perfect Lamb!

Logistically, I don't know how well a crab's claws would trip sheep wool. But they seem like they'd be good clippers. What does that phrase actually mean? Possibly from the wooly wig days.

Sheep Uprising

This was inspired by our trip to Ireland a few years ago - one of our tour guides mentioned how the sheep liked to break through the hedges and get all in the road and stop the cars and he described it as a 'sheep uprising.' Our tour times always had a caveat for sheep uprisings, cause if they were blocking the road then things were gonna be delayed. We did not see any sheep uprisings and also we had a great time over there. So much history and beautiful vistas and such nice people.

Ambiguous Cartoon Critter

 

Here's a picture of the cartoon creature in question - the model is clearly concerned over what it is. 

After polling many people, we had suggestions of mouse, cow, sheep, bear, dinosaur, puppy, lamb, and koala. I was thinking it's a mouse but upon seeing all the suggestions, leaning towards a polar bear. The critter is repeated on the feet of the sleeper but looks roughly the same there so no help from multiple angles. But it's still a cute outfit, even if we don't know what's on it.

Easter Egg Painting

 I thought of this last year and placed it in a place to find it in time for this Easter! I'm quite happy with my organizational skills. Usually I put the holiday ones in a safe place and only find them after the given holiday. That's not the most helpful. The craft is a mash-up of two recipes - clearly the one is deviled eggs but the other is where you take a raw egg, poke the holes, blow it out, then you can use the guts for scrambled eggs or whatever while you have the whole egg shell to paint beautifully. You can't hard boil a shell-less egg - the closest thing I can think of would be poaching, which I've never done.

L: So we can hard boil the eggs, poke a pin hole in the top and bottom, blow the egg out while saving the shell, then I can paint the shells while you make deviled eggs!

Settle the Child

 

This came up because my family likes to play table top games in the evening (usually card but sometimes board). My Mark didn't get this on first read but then it connected, which means I probably need an explanation. To "settle" a child is to help them calm down, usually for a nap or bedtime but sometimes just to calm down from a freak-out. "Settlers of Catan," often abbreviated "Settlers," is a board game where you gain resources by trading or luck of the dice in order to build your settlement. Some of those resources are sheep and wheat (also ore, wood, and brick). Fun fact, the first time I played Settlers was at a year-end vacation (at Word of Life) and the deck was partially in German for some reason but the pictures were clear what they meant.

Fake Gnus Part 1

 

A coworker of mine likes to claim Fake News so after Scrum one day I drew this up. Just in time for the election! Why is it a Part 1? Could there be a Part 2? You'll find out on Tuesday (or by hitting the "Next" button if you're looking at this after 11/3/2020). 

What is a gnu? It's a wildebeest! Have I crocheted one of these from my Pattern Book of African Animals? Surprisingly no, it has a pattern for African Buffalo and I thought that's what a gnu was but I was mistaken.

Hot and Cross Buns

 

Happy Resurrection Day! Hot cross buns are a classic Easter food and I like them as long as they don't have raisins in them (many of them do). I'm just not a fan of raisins in my bread. I know many people like them like that and I will leave them to them and just have a donut. Because if you get the good donuts, like from the Donut Shack near my dentist, they are just amazing. I wonder if the European bakery near me will have hot cross buns in their lineup around Easter time. They just added brioche sticky buns and brioche cinnamon buns, and both are amazing.

Charity

Happy Easter! He is risen indeed. I didn't think up an Easter comic this year. Since I'm safe at home, I'm not near other people to overhear their conversations and make hilarious comics about them, so I have to make due with references from TV shows and also my backlog of comics I haven't gotten around to writing up. But I am safe and healthy so that is good and I am grateful.

I looked at many Bible versions and none translate sins as law-breaking, but sin is breaking God's law so I think it still counts.
I could make a series on this, using the different fruits of the spirit that also happen to be names of people (Charity, Joy, Peace, Temperance, ...) but now I'm thinking I could just do a kids names comic on that because why are some traits used as names but not others? Kindness, get over here. Gratefulness, stop hitting your brother.

Repost: Robin Eggs

Way back in 2012 (wow, 12 years ago!), I came up with one of my favorite comics of all time and yes this is it. I also really like Robin Egg candies so I'm a little biased on this. I didn't come up with a new Easter comic this year because it's hard to get specific ideas, and I usually get them after the holiday and have to write them up and save for the next year.

Looming Equipment

I feel like anyone that has a loom would be an interesting person to meet. I have a ... decent amount of yarn that I use in my crocheting but it's all in a little shelving unit so fairly compact. I think a loom would take up a bit of space. But it could be interesting to use - very home-made stuff, especially if you have your own sheep :)

Old MacDonald Part 1

 

A new twist on a classic song? Or a plot that is thickening?

Explanation: if you have a farm with nothing on it, anywhere, what are you doing with a farm? Clearly you are hiding what you're doing, and it might not be farm related. The song should go "on that farm he had a sheep (or whatever animal)" and then the animal noise in duplicate "with a baa baa here and a baa baa there."

Little Bird Gossip

HAPPY 2'S DAY!!!! Yep, it's 2/22/22 and Tuesday. How nice for that to line up.

I don't recall what prompted this one, probably I heard the phrase "a little birdie told me" or maybe I read that passage in the Bible that mentions it. I thought about drawing the birds as stick figures, but honestly I don't know how to do that unless they are little m's in the sky and that doesn't really work with this dialog.

The phrase means you aren't going to tell who your source is when sharing a bit of information, as if a little bird dropped down and gave you some info. Which sounds like something from the song "Do you hear what I hear" - is one of the characters in that telephone chain a bird? Night wind, little lamb, shepherd boy, mighty king, people everywhere - nope, no birds.

Egghead

In case you're wondering where the term comes from...
