Alpha Gals

If you don't know what Alpha-gal is, consider yourself blessed. My mom-in-law has it, and it's quite limiting on what you can eat. It gives you an allergy to all mammal products - their meat, milk, hooves, etc. You don't realize how much you use mammal products until you try to make something without them.

Explanation: Lyme, CT, is where Lyme's Disease (commonly gained by a tick bite) got it's name. Another tick-bourn illness is alpha-gal. Unrelated, Alpha Males are dudes who want to be super manly men.

Daily Grind

 enable images please

Also, my child was confused because we only drink tea in our household so the concept of a coffee grinder is foreign - it is a thing that exists only at grandma's house. Ah, but after a quick search it shows that the daily grind is referring to a grain grinder, not the coffee kind. And also it's referring to how tedious things grind and wear you down. But also more households have a coffee grinder than a grain grinder, so maybe the meaning of "grind" is changing too.

Explanation: The daily grind is what we call the workday. A meatball sandwich is called a grinder in Connecticut. I, and therefore my children, currently live in Maryland, and my kids don't know all the CT things (despite my efforts).

CT Rest Stop

 enable images please

I really like the mouseover in this one. Check it out.

We traveled to CT over Christmas and we did see a rest stop with just a DD listed and we did not stop there. We prefer a selection of foods when we stop, but then again we have little kiddos so sometimes you just have to take the exit. I do like that the rest stops on the NJ Turnpike are getting renovated - the new ones are quite nice. One had the best changing table station I have ever seen in a public restroom, which might not be saying much but a nice countertop with a ledge and a garbage bin not near the door / high traffic area - it was just right. Sadly I don't recall the name of the stop, but maybe that's a new blueprint more places will use. Way better than the flimsy fold-down koala care ones. But sometimes you're just grateful to have a place to change the baby.

Robin in Connecticut

Again, I was on Pinterest and I saw a Robin comic that I thought was funny so I saved it to my Happy Thoughts board and this inspired a week of comics. Robins are the state bird of Connecticut and therefore are protected there and you aren't allowed to kill them, even if one is attacking your truck's side mirror and crapping all over the side of your truck for several days before mysteriously disappearing. Praying Mantises are the state bird of CT and you aren't allowed to kill them, which is why we were not allowed to play on our play set as kids for like a week when a pod hatched next to the play set and the little baby mantises were covering our swings and slide.

A Feather in Our Hat

And I'm proud to be from Connecticut, where at least I know there's .... nutmeg? (to the tune of "I'm Proud to be an American"). We also have tobacco, insurance, and high taxes.
Yes, the state song of CT is Yankee Doodle, and I was at work a while ago and a manager sent out a memo saying the above statement and it took all of my willpower not to react in the above way. Because what else do you call a feather in a cap? (If you are unaware, back in the Colonial days French fashion was called 'macaroni' and hence the lyrics of the famous ditty. It was supposed to be a derogatory song but instead we made it our state anthem.)
