Alpha Gals

If you don't know what Alpha-gal is, consider yourself blessed. My mom-in-law has it, and it's quite limiting on what you can eat. It gives you an allergy to all mammal products - their meat, milk, hooves, etc. You don't realize how much you use mammal products until you try to make something without them.

Explanation: Lyme, CT, is where Lyme's Disease (commonly gained by a tick bite) got it's name. Another tick-bourn illness is alpha-gal. Unrelated, Alpha Males are dudes who want to be super manly men.

Text:
Title: Somewhere in Lyme, CT
T1: Down with the patriarchy! No more Alpha Males!
T2: Only Alpha Gals here!
T3: Preach it, sister!

Millipede Legs

 enable images please
So I learned this fact when we went to a special class at our library, Zoo To You: Invertebrates. I should have known it would be all bugs, and large ones at that since they wanted you to be able to see them. So we saw an African Millipede which is quite large and apparently has an ever increasing number of legs. Lovely. Also there were hissing cockroaches and a massive hairy spider which I didn't not commit to memory. Zoo To You shows up at the library occasionally and I was remembering the Vertebrates class which had a parrot, a turtle, and a snake or two. There was also a tenrec at one of the classes. Maybe there was a Reptile class then a Vertebrate class. That could be. ANYWAYS only go to an Invertebrate event if you are good with large bugs.

Text:
L: Millipedes get more legs as they grow older. Can you imagine getting more legs as you get older?
O: *full confidence* Yep.
Not pictured: the lady next to us who nearly fell over laughing at Ori's fully confident answer.

Gnats vs Orioles

 enable images please
In my general area, there are two baseball teams - the Nationals (called the Nats) and the Orioles (called the O's). That's all I have to say because I don't follow baseball and can't think of any more baseball things.

Explanation: Gnats sounds like Nats, and the Nats are a team that play the Orioles.

Text:
M: The gnats are attacking me!
L: It's because you're wearing an Oriole's hat.

Honey Bug

 enable images please
Nobody tell him?

Explanation: Honey is from bugs. Bees, to be specific. It's, well, regurgitated by the bees. Yum!

Text:
A: I cannot BELIEVE some people want us eating bugs - YUCK! I don't want to eat anything to do with any bugs!!!
S: Would you like honey in your tea?
A: Yes, please.

Manly Bugs

 enable images please

Happy Birthday to my brother-in-law!
The mind of a preschooler is truly amazing. She knows what ladybugs are, and if it's not a ladybug then clearly it must be the opposite. What I think is impressive is that she now knows what lanternflies are and will point them out to me to squash because she knows that's what we do.

Text:
R: There were bugs outside!
L: What kind, ladybugs?
R: No, not ladybugs.
L: Manly bugs?
R: Yeah, manly bugs.

Ivory Tower Living

enable images

I was pretty happy to think this one up. Yes, the phrase is "living IN an ivory tower" and I did think about how to comic that literally but I thought this one came out cleaner. Not much more to say about it.

Text:
A1: I hear you've been traveling with an elephant.
A2: Yep, he lets me ride on his tusks.
A1: Is it all it's cracked up to be?
A2: Basically, living on an ivory tower is pretty sweet.

Nervous Tick

enable images

Not sure why I made the butterfly monochromatic, but she is what she is. Also, I just learned that the nervous issue is a "tic" not a "tick." AND I just learned that ticks are arachnids, so we're just gonna say that Frank has eight legs, but two of them are hiding behind the six visible legs. Whoops. Also, yet another reason to dislike ticks. DID YOU KNOW that opossums eat loads of ticks and are impervious to Lyme's Disease? That's like, the one good thing about them. (I don't like them - too many scares when taking out the trash at night and seeing those beady eyes staring at me from the darkness.)

Text:
Ladybug: Why is Frank freaking out?
Butterfly: Oh, he's just a nervous tick.
Tick: AAAAAAA

Cicada Dating Service

So this is a little late but I found it in my 'to be posted' comics and realized I need to post it unless I want to wait seventeen years which is a bit excessive but I have to say, I'm glad we don't get invaded like that every year. I mentioned to my husband that I'm glad that cicadas aren't like stink bugs which slide into your house then fly around and he said if cicadas did that, they would be extinct because we would NOT handle that well. It's bad enough when you're driving down the road and they're smacking into the windshield - we would not handle them being indoors. It's annoying in the summer heat to have to keep your car windows closed because yeah, don't want to come back to the car and find it full of cicadas. By the time this is posted, the cicadas will just be carcasses on the sidewalk since they just take over for a month or two by invading in full force then dying off in full force. Maybe don't model yourself after them.

I think the dating advice in question was something along the lines of broadcasting that you're looking for a mate, but it was taken as needing to scream it from the tree tops.

Text:
N: I'm not going to take dating advice from the cicadas.
L: Well, we don't need any context for that?

Debugging

This is based on a shirt my husband got for his brother, which described debugging as being the detective in a mystery where you are also the murderer. It's surprisingly true. You push a nice change, QA says there's an issue, you look at what you just did a day or two ago and somehow nothing looks familiar. How is this data getting through here? It makes no sense anymore.

S: I know I did it but HOW?

A New Flat again

This is a re-draw of this comic - I had forgotten that I'd already drawn and posted it.
